NOTE: despite the fact that the information is presented with a retouching bias, the content will be wqually useful for photographers, make-up artists, models, stylists, fashion designers and in general all those who work in the direction of fashion and would like to see the results of their work in the magazine.

This article will answer the questions: How can a retoucher publish in a magazine? Why does a retoucher need publications in a magazine? What is the process of submitting photos to the magazine? What are the requirements for publication? How many publications in a retoucher's magazine is the norm? Copyright nuances? How to choose a magazine? Rules and nuances of collaboration for publications in the journal.

What is a journal publication

The photography industry is a creative area in which all team members demonstrate their skills: from the photographer, the ability to catch a good shot, from the model, the ability to pose, from the makeup artist, high-quality makeup, from the stylist, neat styling, and from the retoucher, post-processing skills in the form of final corrections. Each of these specialists contributes to the creation of amazing shots. And thanks to the publication in the magazine, they can all declare themselves as a professional in their field.

Why does a retoucher need to publish in a magazine

There are artists who paint for themselves and can occasionally exhibit their work in a local art gallery, and there are professionals who have been honing their style for years and strive for world fame. In the “retoucher” profession, everything is the same, only it is much easier to show your work to the world of retouchers due to the fact that retouching is a digital art.

The benefits of publishing in magazines or briefly about “why a retoucher needs this”:

1. Authenticity: publications allow potential clients to be convinced that the page of the retoucher is real, and not a fake with stolen works. After all, the magazine indicates not only the name of the artist, but also links to selected social networks. networks;

2. Officiality: in most cases, magazines are published mainly in electronic form, while retaining the opportunity to purchase a printed copy. This allows you to go to the magazine's website from anywhere in the world and make sure that all the performers, like the magazine itself, are real. The Kavyar platform can also help with this;

3. Prestige: participation in fashion-collaborations shows that the skill of the retoucher is at a decent level, since many magazines have rather strict selection criteria for the quality of processing. Sometimes teams have to wait up to six months for their work to be accepted, since one journal issue has about 30/40 pages, and applications for participation are submitted on average 10-20 times more;

4. Reputation: retouchers who are actively published - declare themselves, their name, their readiness for major serious projects!

5. Self-evaluation: There are amateur magazines, digital, local and world-class magazines. The first ones are the easiest to get into, as they are created, as a rule, to collect content and an audience. The latter are distinguished by the presence of more serious selection criteria. Local and global are already a prestigious level. You don't have to start right off the bat. You can start with obscure magazines and it will be enough to climb a notch higher in professional growth.

Publication as an impetus to self-realization

I want to separately say a little more about the career. The profession of "retoucher" has the same career growth as other professions. The only difference is that the retoucher himself must objectively decide when his skill level will be sufficient to go higher. Each retoucher goes through the following steps (after the first step, the sequence may change depending on the priorities of the retoucher):

1. Basic training: familiarity with the programs, the basics of the profession; 2. Sharpening the skill: training and practicing retouching techniques; 3. Portfolio: selection of the best works with demonstration of skills; 4. Advanced training: studying different areas of retouching (subject, fashion, beauty, digital, art, collage, restoration, and others);

5. Reputation: working on the name and fame, working out your style, manner of communication, choosing a logo or representative nickname, colors, design, visualization, etc.; 6. Public activity: work with the image, with the audience, determining how the retoucher wants to be seen and perceived by the world. Statement about yourself and your skills on various resources, platforms, participation in competitions, publication in magazines.

With all of the above, it is quite common to find a retoucher who has an amazing style, but who is not widely known. To the question “why, with such a level of work, have I never heard of you?”, They answer “I’m not ready to declare myself, I’m not sure that I’m good, I’m not sure that my work is worthy of getting into a magazine, I I'm afraid to be disappointed." Such retouchers seem to lack something to feel their importance and readiness to move forward. But, as was written above in point 5 “Self-Assessment”, you can always start with little-known magazines and thus gradually build up experience.

How can a retoucher publish in a magazine?

How it goes for those who like short, concise information:

  • Find a photographer;

  • Discuss the nuances of cooperation;

  • Make high-quality retouching;

  • Return the photo, make improvements, if necessary;

  • Wait for the release of the magazine;

  • Receive a letter from the magazine that the issue is out;

  • Publish magazine pages with your retouching, success!

If there were few brief points and questions arose, then this article is just to analyze everything in more detail. So:

1. Who submits photos to the magazine? First of all, it is worth noting that only the full owner of the copyright, that is, the photographer (or a person who has received permission from the photographer to submit a photo for publication), can submit a photo for publication in a magazine. Even in the case when the shooting was purposefully created only for the sake of submitting a photo to a magazine, where all the participants in the collaboration were interested in this, the key word in submitting a photo remains with the photographer. (in this case, the photographer seems to be a shareholder with a controlling stake of 51% out of 100%). Therefore, the retoucher has only 2 options - to create a photo for the magazine himself, or to find a photographer interested in this.

2. Search for a photographer: it is important to understand that when creating content for a magazine, the photographer takes on the organization of the conditions for creating a shoot: finding a studio, searching for a model, makeup artist, stylist, organizing a photo day, preparing props, arranging light, providing all the conditions for creating photos. That is, he incurs costs in the form of his time, which he will not be financially compensated for in any way. And since the publication of works in the magazine is aimed at increasing the reputation, recognition and promotion of the name of each of the participants in the collaboration, the photographer, as a rule, expects an equivalent return from the participants. That is, in most cases, a retoucher for collaboration is sought among TFP groups and communities.

NOTE: TFP this is cooperation with an equal exchange, in which instead of money, each of the parties receives benefits from the cooperation itself. For example, a photographer needs retouching, and a retoucher needs unique photos for a portfolio that others do not have. Instead of money, photos are exchanged for services. This works ideally when the financial assessment of all participants in the collaboration is on the same level. There are also options with paid TFP, when the retoucher makes a significant discount for his work in exchange for publication (for example, with complex collage, retouching five or more models in one photo, working with replacing the background, objects, when working with 15-20 photos with complex retouching, etc.).

3. Where exactly to look? There are many TFP groups in which photographers periodically post ads looking for a retoucher to publish their work in a magazine. Just choose your favorite social media. network, search for "TFP" and subscribe to communities so as not to miss the announcement. Another option is to write to photographers you know with a proposal for a collaboration. In order to immediately find those who are interested in this, and not disturb those who do not need it once again, there is the Kavyar platform - a social network for publicists in the photo industry.

4. Nuances in TFP: it is very important to spell out all the points of cooperation in writing. Even if you think that some things are taken for granted, they are still worth voicing (writing clearly and accessible). Here are the most important of them: how many photos will be in the work? how much work needs to be done? What will be included in the services provided? What are the deadlines? In what form is it allowed to use a photo (demonstration “before / after” or only “before”? Is it allowed to shoot a video of the work process or rails? In which magazine will the photos be submitted? In what form will the signature with the team members be presented? And others. The fact is that DFT cooperation between a retoucher and a photographer, as a rule, always takes place remotely, and the agreements are verbal. Therefore, it is important for both parties to have written evidence of agreements in the form of a text, all questions asked and consents received, so that there are no misunderstandings.

5. Nominal identifier: a record with all the participants of the collaboration is called "team credits". It consists of the name of the participant, his role in the project and a link to the selected social network. network or site. It happens that the retoucher works under a pseudonym that differs from the real name. What is the name then? This is entirely down to personal preference. The magazine allows your name to become known, and which name you want to popularize is up to you.

What are the publishing requirements for journals?

  • Diversity: 1-7 photos with different poses and angles (as a rule, photographers send 10-20 photos to choose from, so that the magazine can take from 1 to 7 photos);

  • Exclusivity: photos must not be published anywhere before the release of the magazine;

  • "No" to branding: no watermarks;

  • Dimensions: portrait minimum 2550 x 3300 pixels, 300 pixels / landscape minimum 5100 x 3300 pixels, 300 dpi (specified individually);

  • Team: the list of "loans" should include names and links to social networks. networks of all collaboration participants without errors;

  • Quality: photos must be in high resolution;

  • Topic: many magazines specialize in publishing a certain style, which should be taken into account during retouching (for example, bias in fashion color, bias in creativity and artistry, bias in the beauty industry, maximum realism, etc.);

  • Price: there is the concept of "competitive place" and "paid place", which in accordance means that the photos for how many pages will be selected among the applicants who paid and the remaining ones will be selected among the rest of the free applications on a competitive basis. The competition for a paid spot is much lower than the competition, but it is important to remember that if the photos are not selected for publication on the paid pages, the payment is not refundable. There are also magazines that publish several issues on different topics. Places can be both paid and free (specified individually).

What about magazine pages on Instagram?

Sometimes retouchers may receive letters from pages that position themselves as a magazine and offer to publish photos with their retouching in order, as they say, to "advertise the retoucher." But often such pages are not officially registered magazines, and their activities are aimed purely at collecting content and selling advertising on their page. The chance that fans or potential customers will come from such pages is very low. But the risk that the photo will be stolen and later used on the pages of strangers without the permission of the photographer and retoucher is extremely high. In addition, it is important to remember that in order to publish a photo anywhere, the retoucher must obtain permission from the photographer.

But not all pages work like this, as there are magazines that officially only deal with digital publishing. What helps to distinguish them from scammers is that these magazines indicate absolutely all contact information about themselves, have their own website, and their magazine identifier can be found in various social networks, including the official Kavyar platform.

What number of publications in a magazine is the norm for a retoucher

The rule “the more the better” does not work in this case, since the most valuable thing is not quantity, but quality. There are thousands of magazines that are ready to take all your photos for the sake of content and are even ready to offer permanent cooperation to fill their pages. But real fame and pride in their work are brought by well-known world-class magazines, which are worth striving to get into. The higher the competition for one place, the more desirable the magazine. On average, it is enough for a retoucher to have about 7-10 publications in different magazines. But this is not a mandatory indicator and it is not worth chasing the quantity.

Final words

That's all. I hope the information was useful for you and helped clarify the answers to your questions. I want to add that you should not refuse to try to participate in a collaboration for publication in a journal out of fear that you may be rejected or that your work may not be liked. Absolutely everything, both good and bad, is a valuable experience. When everything is good, we go through life with a smile, but remain at the same level, having no motivation to develop. Only difficulties help you find the strength in yourself to work deeper on your skills, surpass them and rise to a new peak of personal growth. I wish you to try and fear nothing. Only the one who moves forward achieves his goals, no matter how much effort and time it takes him.
